Ryan Lochte tells Matt Lauer he ‘over-exaggerated’ Rio robbery story
Rio police refuted his story altogether earlier this week. “They fabricated a story”.

As recently as Friday, Lochte’s USA -based attorney, Jeff Ostrow, was telling reporters Lochte stood by his characterization of the incident as a robbery at gunpoint.
New York Times sports media columnist Richard Sandomir said Saturday that “Lochte’s account needed more reporting before it entered NBC’s news ecosystem”. “It’s because I over-exaggerated that story, and if I’d never done that, we wouldn’t be in this mess”.
“There was a gun pointed in our direction. I don’t know, because I was intoxicated”.
In a separate interview with Brazilian television, Lochte admitted he was still “highly intoxicated” when he told the tall tale. I shouldn’t have said that. When Lauer asked what he felt when he saw that his teammates had been detained in Rio after he was safe at home, Lochte said he was “hurt”.
Instead of blaming other things, why don’t you get your head out of your butt and realize that you are representing a damn country, You had people who looked up to you, but I figure you lost a majority of your support.
“They have forever put themselves on the kind of list that you don’t want to be remembered for, ” she told the AP.
Lochte told Brazilian authorities as they attempted to leave the gas station in a cab, one of the security guards forced them out of the taxi at gun point and on the ground. We were all frightened. “The only way we knew was this guy saying you have to give them money, so we gave them money and we got out”. “And the version we’re hearing now is much more about a negotiated settlement to cover up some dumb behavior”. “I over-exaggerated that story”.
“I left details out, which, that’s why I’m in this mess”, he added. None of this would have happened. The people of Rio or Brazil, the authorities, everyone there put on great games.
Asked by the Globo interviewer if he wanted to apologize, Lochte responded, “I am truly 110 percent sorry”.
Phelps carried the flag into the opening of what he says will be his final games, and now the bearer role – as well as maybe the role of being the face of the U.S. Olympic team – belongs to Biles. “I’m human. I’ll definitely learn from this”.
Unfortunately, one event has become the focus of attention, and I want to briefly address that event today. I also want to express my regret for its impact on USASwimming and the USOC.
The incident first was reported by Lochte to be armed robbery of himself and three US swimming teammates.
A portion of the interview aired during the network’s prime time Olympics coverage, with the remainder scheduled to be shown on Monday during NBC Nightly News.
NBC interviewer Matt Lauer went first. Armed guards confronted them, asking for payment for the damages.
Initially, Lochte’s mother claimed he had been the victim of a robbery.

Conger and Bentz have both released statements about what happened on the night in question. This led to the altercation with the security guard.
