Ryan Lochte to Michael Phelps: ‘I’ll see you in Tokyo’

Former Singapore swimmer Mark Chay agreed, noting that Schooling led from start to finish in the race. But I’ll give it to him.

Kosuke Hagino of Japan took the silver and Wang Shun of China earned the bronze.

But Phelps was in a league of his own.

“But the “Baltimore Bullet” couldn’t add to his unparalleled 22 Olympic gold medals in the 100-metre butterfly Friday as he was beaten by outsider Joseph Schooling”, he added.

American Michelle Carter of the US – known as the “shot diva” – stunned defending champion Valerie Adams of New Zealand to earn gold in women’s shot put, winning with her sixth and final throw.

“I just don’t see it happening”, Bowman said.

Meanwhile, Simone Manuel leaned her head into her hands and cried when she recognized her historic achievement.

Schooling made Singaporean sporting history as he won his country’s first Olympic Gold medal.

“I swore in London I wasn’t coming back and this is final”.

Astonishingly, all three touched out in 51.14 seconds, behind Schooling’s Olympic record 50.39 in the second dead-heat in a final in two days. Her world record, set in January, was nearly 12 seconds faster than anyone else in 2016 and nearly eight seconds faster than anyone else in history.

It was quite a night for the powerful American team, which picked up two more golds.

Ledecky joined Debbie Meyer as the only women to sweep the three longer freestyle events at the same Olympics.

For the women, Ledecky can notch her fourth gold of the games in the 800-meter freestyle but faces some stiff competition from teammate Leah Smith, Australia’s Jazz Carlin, and Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas.

Her fingernails painted red, white and blue, Manuel broke down in tears after her landmark victory in a sport that still struggles to attract people of color.

“I’m not going four more years and I’m standing by that”, he said. “The memories mean more than the medals to me”.

Schooling, who took bronze at last year’s world championships, punched the water and roared with delight as Phelps swam over to pat him on the back before le Clos ruffled the youngster’s hair. “It is very exciting to think of it in those terms and to realise that we are on the doorstep of that wonderful achievement”. It might be a little bit harder. It’s their competitive spirit that pushes them to race against not just their competitors, but also themselves.

“I feel very lucky to get on that podium again”. “Need to create a new one for that”, he said.

“I think Chad, Michael and Laszlo should still be the face for butterfly”.

How to watch: The women’s singlesbronze medal match begins at 2 p.m. CT and the gold medal event will take place at 4 p.m. CT.

It would seem likely the historic moment will come in the pool or athletics stadium with those two sports accounting for more than half the US gold production. Thirteen of his golds have come in individual races, the rest in relays.
