But I also think he believes it. I mean, this is not – he is not saying anything new. “I was not asked to dis-unify the Republican Party in Congress; I was asked to unify”, Ryan said. Those are challenges that have dogged Republicans for the entirety of the Obama administration, and Ryan sounded little different than his predecessor, who would tell reporters each week that the “House had done its job” doing “the people’s work”. Because a package that includes riders to defund Planned Parenthood or whatever else-repeal Obamacare, defund executive actions on immigration, require President Obama’s resignation, criminalize association with the Democratic Party-will face a presidential veto, if it even gets that far. “That’s going to work itself out”.
“I’m running for President of the United States, and it’s a serious endeavor”, Bush said on CNN Wednesday. “We were elected by our constituents to represent their interests here in Congress. And that’s what we’re going to do”, he said. “Well, legal status is what I was talking about”, he said.
“We’ve been bold on tactics, but we have been timid on ideas, on policies”. We have nothing to fear from honest differences honestly stated. “And we can show the country what a common sense conservative agenda looks like”.
During his first press conference as speaker on Tuesday, Ryan wouldn’t say whether he would stop factions in his party from tethering provisions to the bill that could hurt its chances of passing.
