Sacramento’s mayor is accused of hitting back after a protester hit him in the face with a pie.
A brief scuffle occurred, Strait told the Sacramento Bee.
Sacramento police said Sean Thompson, 32, was arrested after Johnson’s security detail moved in and restrained him. While witnesses’ accounts differ on the severity of the assailant’s injuries (or whether the two men even fought), Sacramento police confirmed the incident and its immediate aftermath.
“Appreciate everyone. I’m doing fine”, Johnson tweeted. His spokeswoman says the mayor then hit the protester.
The 50-year-old is married to Michelle Rhee, a former chancellor of Washington, D.C., schools, who was at the event Wednesday night.
His signature achievement in office was getting a $500 million arena built for the city’s National Basketball Association team the Sacramento Kings.
