The 74-year-old actress was reportedly suffering from cancer for the past one year, for which she had undergone a successful surgery. Her last rites will be held on Saturday.
Sadhana was married her Love in Simla director Ram Krishna Nayyar.
Ahead of its times, the film showed Sadhana’s character indulging in pre-marital sex and getting pregnant. The film was declared a hit at the box office and was listed in the top 10 films of 1960. She also did two comedy films – “Manmauji” opposite Kishore Kumar and later “Dil Daulat Duniya” with Rajesh Khnana. She soon worked opposite Dev Anand in Hum Dono (1962).
Sadhana is credited with introducing the famous “fringe” haircut – known as her trademark “Sadhana Cut” – and tight body-hugging churidar-kurtas as a much-copied fashion in Bollywood.
Sadhana’s films were worth the penny as good music, and interesting storyline was guaranteed with her name. The second nomination came for Yash Chopra’s blockbuster Waqt (1965).
Composed by Madan Mohan and sung by Asha Bhosle, the song Jhumka Gira Re from movie Mera Saaya, which had Sadhana perform to Saroj Khan’s choreography, became very popular during that time and continues to be a favourite of many.
In fact, she played double role in the film with a slightly negative trait and her acting skills were appreciated. Sadhanaji lit up every frame that she occupied.
Illness kept her away from work and her last major film was Geeta Mera Naam (1974) which she also directed.
Sadhana was born in 1941 and was named after her father’s favorite actress Sadhona Bose.
