Petra Kvitova will play Agnieszka Radwanska in the final of the WTA Finals on Sunday after shocking Maria Sharapova in Singapore.

Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska beat Garbine Muguruza 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-5 on Saturday to reach the final of the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Kvitova broke the Sharapova serve three times en route to winning the opening set but the Russian stormed back in the second as she opened up a 4-0 lead as she stepped into the court more on her return, a tactic which reaped dividends. Armed with an explosive serve and forceful groundstrokes, Muguruza can handcuff Radwanska and drive her back.

Kvitova sent down back-to-back aces to ensure Muguruza would need to serve for the set and the world number three duly obliged to claim the set she needed to ensure she would at least advance from the pool as a top-two finisher. Despite having ousted Simona Halep, the first seed, in her last match, Radwanska came into this match on the backfoot after having lost matches to both Maria Sharapova and Flavia Pennetta.

In her first Tour Finals she opened her account with a victory over Lucie Safarova, included after Serena Williams pulled out, and went on to defeat Angelique Kerber and last year’s Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova. “I was trying it, but it was like too much at the end”, she conceded.

Here’s my prediction as to who will win the penultimate event on this year’s WTA calendar. “Petra is an wonderful player, and I think today she was playing great-she makes me concentrate and give my best”.

Given the way the two have taken it turn to win matches at this event against each other, it seems that it might be Kvitova’s turn once again and I’m inclined to agree. The Asian swing brought a title in Beijing this month and the week before the Venezuela-born Muguruza made the final of another big tournament in Wuhan.

Radwanska ended the group stage of the competition with a 1-2 losing record.

“I think in important moments I’m making the good decision and the right shots, and that’s why I’m here”.

“But, you know, you know the situation, and then you go on court and you try to be focused”. I was very nervous I could not see that many opportunities until the end. “I had two losses in my group, and I couldn’t really believe I would play the semi-finals. I’ve been playing well and all year and hopefully I can continue winning and playing like this”.
