Released just days before the 88th Academy Awards 2016, which are set to be organised on February 28, the findings showed that 89 per cent of film directors shortlisted for the Academy Awards for Best Documentary Feature have been white, and 77 per cent have been male, over the past three years.

The Indiewire blogger called the 41-year-old DiCaprio a “beloved movie star at a time when there aren’t many”, pointing to the punishing film shoot he endured in freezing weather conditions to portray 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass. “The Revenant”, which bloomed late, scored the best drama at the Golden Globes, and massive wins at the Directors Guild and the BAFTAs.

Triumph for Hollywood darling Stallone, who gets standing ovations at most industry gatherings, is seen as the potential feel-good story of the night, four decades after his first nomination for playing the same role – boxer Rocky Balboa.

Redmayne, 34, took home the Academy Award a year ago for his performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. Similar to DiCaprio’s nomination for Best Actor, multiple predictions are already calling “The Big Short” the victor for Best Picture.

The Gold Derby website, which aggregates the predictions of the experts, has “The Revenant” in the lead for best film, but analysts are split on whether Inarritu will also pick up best director for the second year in a row following his win for “Birdman”. This year, all eyes are trained on comedian Chris Rock, who is hosting the show. Say what you want about the Western’s thin plot and thick self-importance, but middlebrow academy members who love it love it like angry white voters love you-know-who.

“That opening Chris Rock monologue is going to be key to how the overall telecast is perceived”, said Dave Karger, chief correspondent for Fandango.com.

That’s right – the SMU Mustang won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Misery back in 1991. The Oscars are, first and foremost a glamorous gala in which the film industry celebrates itself.

“Revenant’s” Leonardo DiCaprio because cold + it’s time – no other best actor competitors looked like they were trying as hard.

Only two directors have won back to back Oscars for Best Director before this, John Ford and Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

Another of the Best Picture nominees, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, is forecast to take six awards: Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup & Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.
