‘Safety Check’ on Facebook allowing for check-ins following Orlando shooting
The deadliest mass shooting in American history ended up being the trigger for the first activation of the feature on United States soil. The feature has been activated in other times of crises including the Nepal quake in April 2015 and the Paris terror attacks this past November.

Earlier this year Facebook apologized for a glitch in its Safety Check service that sent out misdirected notifications after the Easter Sunday bombing that killed 70 people in Lahore, Pakistan. “Over the last few months, we have improved the launch process to make it easier for our team to activate more frequently and faster, while testing ways to empower people to identify and elevate local crises as well”.
To check up on loved ones, or to let others know that you’re OK, head over to the Orlando Safety Check page.
Facebook’s Safety Check feature allows people to notify friends and family they’re safe after a disaster and to check on loved ones in the area.

Orlando police also announced on Twitter that the city has set up a hotline, but the police asked that this number be reserved for family members of those believed to be victims: 1-407-246-4357. It explains its Safety Check helps let friends and family know you’re safe.
