Safety Concerns After Newton’s Helmet-to-Helmet Hits in Denver

In the second half, the Broncos defense broke through. “I know he’s the biggest guy on the field, but he’s still a quarterback”.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) is pressured by Denver Broncos linebacker Shane Ray (56) during the first half of an NFL football game, Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, in Denver.

Coach Rivera during his news conference Friday said something needs to change – if those hits would have been flagged from the beginning – they most likely wouldn’t have continued during the game.

“We missed a blitz pickup or else he throws a touchdown to Emmanuel”, Anderson said. “That was a challenge – when you play that guy and he is such a great player”. You better tackle him like a back.

The most egregious hit, and the only one that drew a personal foul penalty, was delivered by Broncos safety Darian Stewart with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter.

“It was just me being aggressive. It was nothing I could really do about that at that point”, Stewart said.

“I’m not going to question the doctors. OK?” I wasn’t sure if he was running it or what he was doing? “I was a defensive player and I played the game at the highest level as well”, Cecil said.

The Steelers gave him tens of millions of reasons not to make that call.

While Newton held his tongue afterward when pressed about officials who only flagged Stewart’s hit, Rivera on Friday safely broached the touchy topic.

The way the Carolina Panthers quarterback was beaten up in a season-opening loss at Denver, one would think it is back to open season on anyone wearing a helmet and shoulder pads.

The NFL determined Marshall should have been flagged for his hit on Newton, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. What are we supposed to do? According to Rivera, Newton passed “several exams” postgame that if he failed, would have put in him the league’s concussion protocol. In this case, yes he was – clearly.

“It’s kind of been like that since he’s been here”, Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis said. “We saw him limping throughout the game so that running stuff, you can’t do that all game”. “That’s what we do here”.

During an interview with ESPN on Friday, Cecil Newton ripped the officiating crew that called the game, and also had some harsh words for the league itself.

On Friday, the National Football League and Panthers coach Ron Rivera stated that the quarterback underwent proper protocol in determining whether he suffered a concussion on a fourth-quarter hit by Darian Stewart that sent him hard to the ground. “During stoppage in play while on-field officials were in the process of administrating penalties, the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant and team physician requested video from the spotters and reviewed the play”. As of 2 p.m. ET, Newton still was not displaying any symptoms of a concussion, a league source said.

After the game Newton said he’d been evaluated for a concussion in the locker room. Still, many Broncos knew the wear their hits were taking on Newton.

“I’m happy they took a lot of concern with the collision I had with (Panthers safety) Kurt Coleman, ” Norwood said. “That’s what we try to bring every week to make everybody fear us”.

But he is now 0-1 for the season, after going 15-1 a year ago. “We were physical and that’s what we want to do this year”.
