Safety Jones skips Dolphins minicamp in contract dispute

Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones wants a new contract, and he didn’t show up Tuesday for the start of mandatory minicamp to apparently make his point. The former Bulldogs star faced a $26,000 fine for missing the Tuesday session and could have seen that total balloon to $76,000 if he missed the entire minicamp. Players in their final years will sometimes take the fines, knowing the new deal will more than make up for it, but Jones has multiple years left on his contract.

Jones is coming off a career year in which he led the Dolphins in tackles (135) and interceptions (five).

And while the months-long holdout didn’t accomplish what Jones wanted – a fresh contract with big guaranteed dollars – Jones is optimistic that a new deal is still in the cards. “We want to put him in position where he can make as many plays as possible”.

Reshad Jones is back. He jumped right in there. “I work out with him everyday”. He didn’t participate in any of the team’s voluntary spring practices. “We’re going to concentrate on what guys we have here”.

“It’s a good feeling for the coaching staff to get all your pieces kind of in place and get these guys rolling in the right direction as far as what we’re trying to teach”, Jones said.

While the team has an idea of how they plan to use Jones this year, Gase said nothing is determined yet. Obviously, our best player on defense, a great football player.
