As Americans prepare to celebrate the nation’s 240th birthday, the Division of Fire Safety is reminding Missourians that professional fireworks shows offer the most exciting and entertaining sights – and are the safest way to enjoy fireworks. Most emergency room visits were for the treatment of burns, and the most common injuries were to the eyes, hands, head and face. Yet, the thrill of fireworks can also cause some serious damage if handled incorrectly.
It is illegal to sell, transport or use fireworks that do not carry the “safe and sane” seal.
“I think anytime you use anything with fire, sparks and with heat in Phoenix you have to be really careful”, said Phoenix grandmother Mick Jansen.
– A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities.
Don’t use fireworks while consuming alcohol. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 40 percent of all firework-related accidents are caused by sparklers and firecrackers, and the majority of bodily injuries are burns to the hands, fingers, head, face, eyes and ears. They can burn at about 2,000 degrees, according to the consumer public safety commission, and are a top cause of burns around the Fourth of July.
The NFPA has more information about how to stay safe around fireworks.
– If you allow them sparklers, make sure you monitor them. The risk of fireworks injury was highest for young people ages 0-4, followed by children 10-14.
Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, encourages all residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals this Fourth of July and adhere to New York State fireworks safety laws.
Light only one item at a time and never attempt to re-light.
Never try to re-light fireworks that malfunction.
Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. Check with your local town hall, municipality, or your local newspaper to find scheduled fireworks displays in your area.
