Other surprise snubs in the supporting actor category were Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”), Benicio Del Toro (“Sicario”) and Michael Keaton (“Spotlight”) – all considered frontrunners in the Oscars race. In fact, with the exception of a few names-most obviously the boys from “True Detective” Season 1-the major individual and ensemble categories are close replicas of last year’s. Over the past three years, 11 of 12 SAG winners proceeded to win the Academy Award (Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln is the only miss.) All three ensemble cast winners later claimed the best pitcure Oscar.

Since the SAG Awards are voted on by actors, for actors, the top award in any category is the ensemble or cast performance award. The film centering on The Boston Globe’s investigation into the Catholic Church’s child abuse cover-up still garnered two nominations, best ensemble and an unexpected supporting actress nod for Rachel McAdams.
TBS, TNT and truTV will air the 2015 SAG Award nominations announcement live starting at 10 a.m. ET/PT. Actor Christian Bale received a supporting actor nod for his appearance in “The Big Short”, as did Idris Elba for his appearance in “Beasts of No Nation” and Michael Shannon for the film “99 Homes“.

This SAG policy did help a couple of other films land nominations: Rooney Mara (“Carol”) and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) got supporting nods, though other awards groups – including the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which announces its Golden Globe nominations Thursday morning – have decided they are leads.
