SAG Awards arrivals begin, ‘Big Short’ and ‘Spotlight’ vie

“Orange Is the New Black” dominated the comedy series trophies at the SAG Awards, winning the ensemble cast and the female actor award for Uzo Aduba.

We’re not sure what went into Burnett’s decision to wear fuzzy slippers on the carpet, but we presume that after years and years of having to look super glamorous at award shows, she’s finally sticking it to the man and doing what she really wants. Along with her two individual wins, it means Uzo Aduba has won four SAG Awards in two years. No matter if no one tells you to get out of that line that you’re waiting in, stay in line, you have the chance, it is yours’.

Elba, who was notably overlooked in Oscar nominations, won best supporting actor for another Netflix product: Cary Fukunaga’s child soldier drama “Beasts of No Nation”.

Leonardo DiCaprio trumped British hopeful Eddie Redmayne for the outstanding performance by a male actor in leading role award for his performance as a fur trapper in revenge epic The Revenant.

After Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” – which features many black and Latina actress – won best TV comedy ensemble, actress Laura Prepon proclaimed: “This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity”.

In the supporting categories, Alicia Vikander’s win for “The Danish Girl” may well be repeated on Oscar night.

The women’s race, however, is a less diverse affair, with rising star Brie Larson (“Room”) and Ireland’s Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) in a close race for lead movie actress. ‘This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity. Both have been heavy favorites this awards season, collecting many prizes, including Golden Globes from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. “As the history of cinema unfolds, you realize that we all stand on the shoulders of giants”.

SAG Awards Committee Chair JoBeth Williams said the actor-focused awards show has “worked very hard to reflect the real world”. The two gave a peek at their easygoing relationship when they joked about meeting the legendary Carol Burnett, who’s receiving a Life Achievement Award at this year’s SAGs.
