SAG Awards nominations: Diverse, popular movies get nods

While the film was not nominated for any Golden Globe Awards this morning, it was recognized by the Screen Actors Guild in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, what amounts to the SAG version of best picture.

Redmayne will compete against Irish actor Michael Fassbender, who was nominated for his titular role in Steve Jobs; Bryan Cranston, who received a nod for his portrayal of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in Trumbo; Johnny Depp, who won plaudits for his role as Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger and Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in the highly anticipate revenge epic The Revenant.

Elba also received two nominations, for best supporting actor for playing a sadistic African warlord in “Beasts of No Nation” and for best actor, starring as a tormented detective in the British TV series “Luther“. The Hollywood blacklist drama “Trumbo” scored a leading three Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, but it was sleeper contenders “Beasts of No Nation” and “Straight Outta Compton” that entered the awards conversation in a real way when both were nominated for best ensemble drama.

The biggest surprise inclusions lay in the best actress category, with Mirren (Woman In Gold) and Sarah Silverman (I Smile Back) joining other early leaders Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) in that race.

The 22nd annual SAG awards winners will be announced on January 30 in Los Angeles.

“Trumbo” and TV series “House of Cards” are leading the list of nominees for the 2016 SAG Awards.

The prize for supporting actor will be disputed between Christian Bale for The Big Short, Mark Rylance by the Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and young actor Jacob Tremblay for his role of a child in captivity in Room.

Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad fame landed a best actor nomination for his role as Trumbo and Helen Mirren had a supporting actress nomination for her role as conservative gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

Nominees for best comedic ensemble are “Big Bang Theory”, “Key and Peele”, “Modern Family“, “Orange Is the New Black”, “Transparent” and “Veep“.

The nominees in either film or television category are chosen by 2,200 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members from across the United States in each panels.

“It goes without saying that my performance is shared with the tremendous actors I work with”, wrote Elba, congratulating his “Beasts” co-stars Abraham Attah and Kurt Egyiawan as well.

And with a cast of New Zealand’s finest stunt men and women, Mad Max: Fury Road is nominated in the Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture category.
