SAG Indians strike two gold medals in weightlifting

Feb 5, 2016- Nepal on Friday were assured of winning at least a bronze medal in women’s field hockey after only three teams entered the draw in the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati, India.

Damini Gowda then brought home the third gold for India in women’s 100m butterfly as she clocked one minute and 4.92 seconds to finish much ahead of two Sri Lankans K A Hiruni Perera (1:06.89) and Machiko Raheem ( 1:07.24).

In the men’s cycling 40 KM event, Arvind Panwar of India won the Gold while Manjeet Singh (India) won silver and Sri Lankan cyclist Janaka Hemantha Kumara Gonagalage won the Bronze medal.

Sri Lanka’s Matthew Abeysinghe continuing his dominance in Swimming bagged the first gold medal in the Men’s 200m Freestyle Swimming and the second gold in the 100m Butterfly Swimming.

Winning the silver medal in women’s wrestling event was the lone highlight for the Bangladeshi athletes on the opening day of the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati, Assam yesterday.

Kiran Jayasinghe won a silver medal in the Men’s 200m Breast Stroke event, clocking 02 minutes and 26.17 seconds as India’s Sandeep Sejwal won the gold medal with a timing of 01 minute and 20.66 seconds and Bangladesh’s Shariful Islam won the bronze after clocking 01 minute and 26.99 seconds. India bagged a total of 19 medals with 14 gold and 5 silver medals. However, Indian Olympic football team were stunned 1-0 by Sri Lanka in the opening game.

Eight countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides India – will be vying for the top honours in the Games to be co-hosted by Shillong.

Priyanka opened the gold medal account for India by defeating Sumitra of Nepal 4-0, while Niroshan of Sri Lanka won the bronze. Michiko Raheem won the bronze in the women’s 100m Butterfly.

Chanu lifted a total of 169kg (79kg in snatch + 90kg in clean and jerk).

The “Gender Equal Games” have 23 disciplines and 228 events, with all the sports having both men and women’s sections for the first time, making this edition the biggest ever sporting spectacle in South Asia.

Meanwhile, neighbours Bangladesh, who finished with a bronze medal last time, will be tough competitors.
