On Sunday the Vermont Lake Monsters lost a close one to the Tri-City Valley Cats, taking a lead into the ninth before the Cats rallied for two in a walk-off win, but things weren’t almost so close last night.

Yankees 6, Astros 3: CC Sabathia allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings to get back on track after a tough stretch and help NY over Houston.

Designated hitter Victor Martinez went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and catcher James McCann hit a home run for the Tigers, who left 10 men on base.

With the game tied in the sixth, Collins drew a bases-loaded two-out walk, which allowed Justin Upton to score the decisive run.

Detroit and Boston combined for 22 hits on a night when both starting pitchers struggled. Pomeranz, a lefty, allowed two runs on four hits over six innings for the Red Sox.

“Our ability to go out and put up a complete game is important to head out on the road where we know things are going to be more hard, just being away from Fenway Park”, manager John Farrell said before the game.

He surrendered just two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out a season-high eight in 5 1/3 innings, but took the loss in a 2-1 setback against Minnesota.

His exit Tuesday was the quickest since he also went 4 2/3 innings June 25 at Texas, which was also his last loss.

“There’s never a comfortable spot when you’re a closer, but he’s as savvy a pitcher and has one of the better changeups I’ve ever come across”, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.

NOTES: Boston C Ryan Hanigan (flu-like symptoms) was a late scratch.

John Farrell on Joe Kelly’s outing: “A lot of velocity, some inconsistent command”: “He was powerful”, said Red Sox manager John Farrell.

“It was tough to get the ball out to right today”, Ausmus said. Alex Wilson (1-0) got the victory, and Francisco Rodriguez closed for his 29th save.

The Tigers then added to their lead in the top of the second.

That was followed by RBI singles from Collins and Jose Iglesias in the second inning that made it 4-0.

After a strong first inning, Pelfrey danced around trouble in the second, and waltzed back into it in the third.

It started in the third when Boston almost erased Detroit’s lead with one big swing by Ortiz.

The Red Sox took the lead back an inning later on an RBI groundout by Brock Holt and RBI double by Betts.

Martinez ripped a two-run single in the top of the third to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Xander Bogaerts and Dustin Pedroia hit solo homers for the Red Sox, who lost for the fifth time in six games to complete a 4-5 homestand.

Pomeranz entered Monday’s start looking to bounce back from his dismal Boston debut last week against San Francisco, in which he gave up five runs in just three innings.

Steven Wright had two of his lesser starts in July, but overall has been very good this season.
