According to Lt. Scott Wahl with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), the wild stunt happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday on San Diego’s famous Coronado Bridge located approximately six miles from downtown.

“They were sorry they were caught, but that’s the risk you take when you have this kind of hobby”, said Harbor police Sgt.

A police helicopter crew flew over the scene and saw the jumpers picked up by a boat that was waiting underneath the bridge, Cali said. The boat operator was cited for speed limit violations.

Base jumping is illegal and typically prosecuted as a public nuisance, Rakos said.

Police talked to the men at the Glorietta Bay Boat Ramp at Coronado Island.

This was not connected to any Navy exercises and the four men are part of a group called “Jump Zone”.

Base jumping is done from a fixed object. CHP handed the driver a ticket for stopping on the bridge. The incident was turned over to military police for further investigation.
