Sainthood to be conferred on Mother Teresa next year
Rome/Kolkata: Mother Teresa will be canonised as saint of the Roman Catholic Church next year, the Vatican and the Missionaries of Charity announced on Friday, a day after Pope Francis recognised a second miracle attributed to the Nobel laureate.

Pope Francis has recognised a second miracle attributed to the revered nun, clearing the path for her to be elevated to sainthood, the Vatican said yesterday.
A second miracle is needed for canonization, which means the person becomes a saint.
Born Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu and after having lived in Macedonia for some 18 years, Mother Teresa moved to Ireland and then to India, where she lived for most of her life.
It is with universal happiness that Mother Teresa’s impending elevation to sainthood is being greeted in India.
Mother Teresa who died on September 5, 1997, aged 87 had also faced criticism for the methods adopted in providing health care and also for her rejection of contraception and medicine. Mother Teresa had formerly been beatified – a term that describes the Church’s acknowledgement of a man’s entry into paradise as well as step one in the canonization procedure – in 2003 by Pope John Paul II for performing one miracle: the healing of an Indian girl’s tumour through divine intervention.
The Vatican ascertained that his wife’s prayers for Mother Teresa’s intercession were responsible, the report said.
Hence, two miracles were attributed to her name after she was beatified.
Teresa was the foundress of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity and the Missionaries of Charity, and has been recognized for her devotion serving the poor in the Indian city of Calcutta. The Catholic Church believes that a saint is someone who is thought to have been holy enough while they were alive to be now present with God in Heaven.
Sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik creates a sand sculpture of Mother Teresa at Rourkela Steel City in Sundargarh district on Friday. After working with the Sisters of Loreto till 1948, she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1949.

“Probably the only surprise there is about this is the fact that it was so sudden after her death, usually its 100 years or so”, Monsignor John Hemann from Clear Lake said. Her canonisation in Rome is expected to again draw large crowds for what will likely be one of the highlights of the special Jubilee year.
