Saints acquire pass-rusher McCain from Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have traded pass rusher Chris McCain to the New Orleans Saints for a conditional seventh-round pick. Now with his focus on joining the Saints and finding a way to get on the field, McCain’s past with both Cal and Miami is behind him, and only New Orleans is ahead. The 6-5, 236 pounder also contributed on special teams.

He was buried on the defensive end depth chart, but had shown flashes of edge rushing ability.

McCain, a former University of California standout the Dolphins signed as an undrafted rookie in 2014, has struggled to earn playing time during his tenure in Miami for various reasons. But the Saints have essentially been in the market for pass-rush help since back in March – a need that became even greater after second-year defensive end Hau’oli Kikaha went down with a knee injury this summer.

McCain seems to have confirmed he’s heading to New Orleans on Monday afternoon.

The Dolphins, who announced the trade Monday evening, did not disclose the draft pick they’d received.

McCain played in 19 games over the past two seasons (2014-15) with the Dolphins.

Assuming the Dolphins do not acquire a player in the deal, that leaves them at 77 now on the roster, with the team needing to trim to 75 by 4 pm tomorrow.
