Saints, Brees Reach New Deal

An incredibly durable passer who has missed just two games in a decade in New Orleans, Brees has suffered no major structural injuries since the dislocated shoulder and torn labrum that Dr. James Andrews repaired in 2005, right before Brees became a member of the Saints.

Drew Brees will stay in New Orleans, after agreeing to a new contract extension with the Saints. Brees is the highest paid quarterback in the league earning $30 million in the 2016 NFL Season.

Re-signing him was easier said than done for a Saints team that has been spinning its wheels at 7-9 in each of the past two years, stretching the salary cap to its limits. “I’ll be here for as long as they want me”. And I think that just made everyone a bit more comfortable and it still put us in a very good position to go out and do the things we need to do to continue to build the team and put us in the best position to succeed. “I want to play my entire career here…”

ESPN’s Ed Werder reported that Brees’ extension is five years, but it automatically voids to two. The sides had apparently been attempting to reignite contract talks this week because Brees had a self-imposed deadline for working out a new contract. Brees is also a nine-time Pro Bowler, having been named one in 2004, 2006, and from 2008-14. Next year could be a different story, but that’s a bridge New Orleans shouldn’t mind crossing often when dealing with a player in his late-30s.

“I’m excited for him”, said backup quarterback Luke McCown, whose locker is to the immediate left of Brees’.

In 10 seasons as Saints quarterback, Brees has led the offense to a top 10 ranked offense every year.

The Oakland Raiders are coming from a 23-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last week in a preseason game. “And that’s a great thing for me, for the team, for anybody really”.

Grayson, Colorado State University’s career passing leader, was selected by the Saints in the third round of the 2015 National Football League draft. “This is what was in the best interest of the team”.

And for now, that’s at least two more years, which guarantees Breesus will be around the Big Easy until he’s 39.

Now, the focus shifts to the team protecting Brees. “Like I said, [Saints General Manager] Mickey [Loomis] is working closely with Drew and Drew’s agent, and when something gets done – if it gets done – we’ll let you guys know”.
