Saints coach Payton expects Brees to start Sunday

The New Orleans Saints plan to start Drew Brees on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, coach Sean Payton said Friday.

Brees hurt his shoulder against the Buccaneers in Week 2 and didn’t play against the Panthers last Sunday. If Brees does start as planned, he’ll return to a club that is 0-3 and in desperate need of a victory.

Brees returned to throwing duties in practice Wednesday, and by all accounts, he’s got the velocity and the spiral to make all of the throws in the Saints’ offense as New Orleans tries to escape the dwindling ranks of the winless National Football League teams against a Cowboys team that is battered and bruised itself, missing quarterback Tony Romo and receiver Dez Bryant.

I jest, but this is actually fairly close to what is going on right now with the New Orleans Saints. “That return has helped my confidence and I think it has got the guys’ confidence in me that I can be a good returner”.

Weeden went 22-for-26, his highest completion rate as a starter for his career, for 232 yards and a pick while Randle picked up 87 yards on 14 attempts and running back Lance Dunbar totaled 10 receptions for 100 yards. But the rehab has gone well and you know how he is with being meticulous and all of that.

The courses are so long and fiendishly constructed that the quarterbacks must consider genuine golf strategies – “laying up, throw it over here, dog leg left”, said [former Saints QB Ryan] Griffin. The Saints will release its official injury report for the Dallas game Friday afternoon.

In addition to Breesm Keenan Lewis, Jairus Byrd and Dannell Ellerbe were listed as probable for the Sunday night game against Cowboys.

Luke McCown replaced Brees and played well in defeat.

“It is no different from the quarterback early on who, in his first or second year is getting his first start, sails a few passes over the head or throws an interception”, Payton added.

Other numbers point to the Saints’ demise: they are now 29th in total team defense; New Orleans, once almost impossible to beat at in the Superdome, has been highly vulnerable of late-they will be trying to break a six-game home losing streak on Sunday night.
