Saints cut running back C.J. Spiller, former free-agent signing
The New Orleans Saints have released running back C.J.

I asked Payton how much it sets a team back when they miss in free agency, as they did past year with their two most expensive signings – Spiller and cornerback Brandon Browner, who was cut in the spring. Eli Manning totaled 350 yards and 6 touchdowns in last years game against the Saints.
Spiller said he doesn’t have any hard feelings when it comes to the Saints, saying the team “really believed in me during free agency”. They gave me another opportunity when my contract was up in Buffalo. I have nothing but good relationships that I have built here. But when a player’s potential never turns into results teams give up on them. “I think you just understand going into the game what you are going up against and knowing what they are capable of on the other side of the ball, and knowing that you have to be your best”. A league source confirmed that it wasn’t health-related.
“This guy’s a phenomenal, phenomenal guy”, Payton said. They were horrendous against the pass last season, and after the departure of their ex-number 1 cornerback in Brandon Browner and last week’s injury to their number 1 cornerback for this season in Delvin Breaux, the Giants have a huge advantage passing the football this week. But Payton emphasized that Spiller was “a phenomenal guy (and) teammate”, and added that “the window in this building or this club’s not definitely closed”. “So I think Odell is right”.
“You’ve got to expect they’re going to be able to score because they have that ability”, Manning said of the Saints offense. “Obviously last season was frustrating because he dealt with the knee injury in training camp”. “Even though we were down late in the game, and headed into the fourth quarter, I didn’t feel at any time that there was any doubt by anybody on the team, offense or defense”.
On their second play of the ensuing drive, the Raiders busted loose for a back-breaking 75 yard touchdown run and converted the two point conversion to tie the game up. Eventually, the Saints shelved him for the final two weeks and replaced him with Cadet. The Saints seemed committed to him after allowing his base salary of $1.7 million to become fully guaranteed in March. Willie Snead caught all nine targets from Drew Brees on Sunday and put up a career-high 172 yards with a touchdown.
And maybe you’d like to chat about the Giants’ offensive line, which was a soft spot coming into the season, but protected Eli Manning in the opener while providing enough running room for 113 yards on 24 carries, a 4.7 yard average.
“If that’s what the other team’s focus is, then somebody else will be free”, he said. Spiller will cost another $2.5 million next year.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has been the offensive play-caller for the team for most of his career because it’s something he loves to do, and he happens to be really good at it. Payton, however, is prepared to quit calling offensive plays this season if it helps him manage the entire team better.
