Saints’ Drew Brees: Pace of contract talks not hurting team
“There’s no timeline, no deadline, we’re both confident that something will get done when it needs to”, said Saints quarterback Drew Brees. He only has a year remaining from the five-year deal he signed with New Orleans in 2011.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees certainly wants to stick around with the team for the rest of his career, but he also doesn’t want to be a burden on the cap.
“Right now we have more defensive players on our board than offensive”, he said.
When the Carolina Panthers suddenly rescinded their franchise tag on cornerback Josh Norman, making him suddenly an unrestricted free agent, it quickly became apparent that Washington and New Orleans were his top destination options.
The Saints drafted Garrett Grayson in the third round last year and Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said during a Wednesday press conference that the team’s research into quarterbacks this year hasn’t been a big change from past years. That pick was traded previous year as the Saints moved up in the 2015 draft to select Georgia cornerback Damian Swann.
For the Saints, that’s a very skewed scale; considering that they recently have found a bit of success somewhat in trading up for wide receiver Brandin Cooks in 2014 (the only member of his draft class left) versus the trade up for a player like defensive tackle Al Woods in 2010 – who never even made it to the regular season.
The 2016 NFL Draft has a number of quality offensive linemen who can play guard or tackle, so could the Saints be looking to draft a young player who can jump from tackle to guard or guard to tackle?
The Saints have been absolutely atrocious against the pass over the last several years and is a major area of concern going into the 2016 season.
Brees also said he didn’t think there was any use in talking about the idea of the Saints drafting a QB in Round 1, since he doesn’t think it will happen. “It’s going to be a different viewpoint for every team, depending upon who we draft and how they turn out”. That’s a question for him more than me.
“We’re always trying to add good players”. Next thing you know, the Eagles have moved up for the No. 2 pick, and Bradford is demanding a trade out of town. If he cut New Orleans a hometown discount to reach one more Super Bowl, it would help matters on the salary-cap front and make sense.
Drew Brees has been in New Orleans since the 2006 season and is easily one of the best to ever take the field for the team.
The Saints now have one pick in every round but round 6. Round two and three will be selected Friday night.

Head coach Sean Payton signed a five-year extension earlier this offseason, but he has been shifting the team into a rebuilding phase over the past few seasons.
