Saints formally release receiver Colston
Reports last week said the move was coming, but New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said Marques Colston has not been released in an ESPN interview on Monday that was evidently taped a day before.

With Colston’s release, only three players remain from the Saints’ Super Bowl victory following the 2009 season: quarterback Drew Brees, offensive tackle Zach Strief and punter Thomas Morstead.
Colston’s 72 touchdowns are also the most in team history.
Colston was originally a seventh round draft pick by the Saints in the 2006 NFL Draft out of Hofstra University.
Despite his numbers, Colston was never selected for the Pro Bowl.
“Gonna miss my dawg Colston being around”, safety Kenny Vaccaro tweeted after the official news of Colston’s release broke. “One of the greatest teammates I’ve ever had”. The regress in level of play has led to Colston’s demise. “It’s been an honor bro”.
None of that was lost on Colston. “Thank you for allowing me to be a part of something so much bigger than football in New Orleans. Because of you, New Orleans will always hold a special place in my heart”.

Colston was entering the final year of his five-year, $36.3 million contract which included $17.7 million guaranteed. 506 of Colstons career catches went for first downs.
