Saints RB CJ Spiller undergoes surgery, expected back for week one

New Orleans has finished near the top of the league in pass attempts to running backs in recent years, and Spiller is slated to play a significant role similar to that of former Saints players Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles, and Pierre Thomas.

The Clemson product missed the Saints scrimmage last Friday and was out for training camp practice Tuesday after just limited work the previous two days.

It’s unclear if Spiller suffered a setback or if he and the team felt a clean-up surgery would be a better choice in the long term. In 2012, Spiller rushed for 1,244 yards, 6 touchdowns, and caught 43 balls for 459 yards and 2 more touchdowns. In 70 games in his career, he has fumbled 17 times.

Let’s face it: Robinson’s talent is such that he could easily start for over half the teams (probably more) in the NFL.

Spiller has also had a but of a fumbling problem as well in his career. He is expected to be the Saints third-down back behind Mark Ingram. Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t comment on Spiller’s injury status after practice Saturday.
