Saints receivers, Patriots defensive backs tested each other

It was the Saints third touchdown of the game.

Tom Brady’s media blackout, purportedly on advice of lawyers handling the legal challenge to his “Deflategate” suspension, has left him unavailable to even discuss how the New England Patriots look on the football field.

“Iron sharpens Iron. I mean we are getting to practice against the defending world champions and I knew that’s going to get us better and they have the same mentality in going against us”, Brees said. It’ll be interesting to see if Brown can continue making plays in Saturday night’s showdown against the Saints in the Superdome and lock up a starting job.

The New England Patriots lost to the Green Bay Packers, 22-11, in Week 1.

Rob Ninkovich’s time with the New Orleans Saints wasn’t remarkable, but it’s a situation that he’ll likely never forget.

On the second drive, Brees hit running back Khiry Robinson for a 17-yard gain and receiver Brandin Cooks for a 24-yard gain. Robinson had 15 rushing yards and 28 receiving yards.

Drawing conclusions from the preseason is a perilous exercise. If the Patriots can avoid injuries to key players, the final score is irrelevant. The shadow game behind the game is the one that’s important.

-Offensive tackle Marcus Cannon should also make his preseason debut in New Orleans after missing two-plus weeks of camp and the preseason opener with an undisclosed injury.

Saints work against Patriots without top 3 corners and do well. The value the Saints should get from these preseason games are continuity, chemistry and most important staying healthy. There were flashes of effectiveness, but not too much that resulted in points. I’d like to see Garoppolo be able to react and adjust to the coverage and pre-snap reads instead of trying to force a scripted play. Although he was not the starter, he rushed for 391 yards, and two touchdowns. It showed that he still has some juice in that highly scrutinized 36-year-old body.

Backup QB – The Saints will supposedly be playing Drew Brees for at least a quarter tonight, so who will get more time between Luke McCown, Ryan Griffin, and Garrett Grayson, and who does the most with the time given? “So, it just looked good to me”. With 4 out of 5 of their best cornerbacks gone from past year, and Vince Wilfork now a member of the Houston Texans, this defense appears as though it will struggle. For a while, I didn’t have that. “There are a ton of things we need to work on and when you get a different team (in practice) I think it prevents you from falling into that going-through-the-motions routine that can happen”.

In 2007, New England was levied heavy fines and docked draft picks by the NFL, which found the Patriots improperly videotaped an opponent’s coaches’ signals. “He was good”, said Payton about Brees. But there’s a chance Watt might just be a spectator again, with O’Brien saying “there will probably be a couple of guys who won’t play in the game”.
