In that case, Brees’ salary cap hit would decrease to about $23 million in 2015 and increase to about $30 million in 2016.
Sean Payton said Wednesday during his morning teleconference that freeing up salary cap space helps the team operate during the season.
Payton said Wednesday he the Saints are “one short at tight end, and that concerns me”. This could mean the Saints are on the verge of wheeling and dealing for a player.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees plans to play Sunday against the Cowboys after missing last week with an injured shoulder.

New Orleans is very much in win-now mode with Brees getting up there in age, and its handling of his contract certainly seems to speak to that.
