Saints see finale as chance to consolidate recent gains

With Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints have been operating an annual offensive powerhouse.

Snow, ice target huge swath of Midwest
The Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles are bracing for what National Weather Service forecasters are calling a “historic blizzard”. The site reported the natural phenomenon cause an average of 70 fatalities and 1,500 injuries in the country each year.

Yesterday, against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Drew Brees responded to the stupidity leaked from his front office to Rapaport in the same way he usually responds to people who are stupid: by incinerating a defense.

Kelly wants Bradford back in Philly as his QB
After losing to the Redskins, the Eagles (6-9) are apparently assured of a losing record, which is Kelly’s first as a head coach. The Philadelphia offense sputtered early in the second quarter, with penalties on three straight plays during one stretch.

But it seems unlikely that is going to happen.

Pellegrini: We should have beaten Leicester
Barring the last week, it seemed like there could be nothing that could stop Leicester City as they continued their fine form this season.

-PASSING OFFENSE: C. Blake Bortles passed for 368 yards, but that was misleading because he threw two picks while the Saints were jumping out to a 24-0 lead.

Though Jacksonville had dropped three of its previous four games, none of the losses were by more than six points. Quarterback Drew Brees and his team were going to go for it if they got close enough on third down, and the Jaguars had to implement a strategy with this in mind. He’s thrown for 4,547 yards and 31 touchdowns on a team that’s largely failed because of its defense. The veteran led the Saints to touchdowns on their first three possessions.

NOTES: With five catches for 123 yards, WR Brandin Cooks became the first Saints wide receiver since Marques Colston (1,154) and Lance Moore (1,041) to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season. The game couldn’t have meant less to the Saints and yet Brees played because he wanted to.

“People might say we have nothing to play for as far as playoffs and such, but we have a lot to play for”, Brees asserted. “The coaches told us all week that we needed to raise our level of play”, Breaux said. I couldn’t see a noticeable limp from Brees during the game but you could see he was less willing to run or scramble out of the pocket, and the lack of mobility caused him to take a couple of big shots during the game. “We’ve had great stability with ownership and leadership here from the top down, and I think it’s been a plus for us, not a detriment”. So, yeah, that’s disappointing. The motivation to go out and play hard, win. “We can count on these things, now let’s add to it. Some of these things that we’re counting on week-in and week-out didn’t show up, and that’s disappointing”. They, of all teams, appreciate how special it is to have an elite punter they’ve been able to rely on for eight seasons – considering they’ve gone through 10 different kickers since 2006. Sure, they might get a camp invitation next summer but their inactive status Sunday was telling. We’ve been accustomed to seeing them quite often in this Saints regime. “There’s always hope in that”.

Jacksonville gets one last shot at playing better defense Sunday at Houston (8-7).

Looking ahead to 2016, this Panthers offense should become a little more balanced with the return of a healthy Kelvin Benjamin to help the passing game. Marks also played in just four games before having season-ending surgery to fix a torn triceps tendon.

With that in mind, this morning we take a look at the best available “pass rushers” – both D-Linemen and linebackers – that the Saints will likely look to sign in a few months from now, when 2016 NFL Free-Agency begins on March 12th, 2016. You need to know the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents so you can adjust your play-calling for success. There is a small chance he might not even be in New Orleans next year, and yet there he was shredding the Jaguars.

Still, the Jaguars believe it can be a quick fix.
