Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that his players must maintain the standards they set against Manchester City if they are to keep pace in the Premier League title race.

In doing so, Martina became the first player from Curaçao to score a Premier League goal – and surely put himself in the mix for the goal of the season prize.
Wenger’s charges have now missed the chance to leapfrog Leicester City, who also lost on Boxing Day, while Southampton remain in 12th spot.
Cuco Martina was the unlikely catalyst of Southampton’s first win since November 7, with the full-back marking his first league start with an exceptional half-volley with the outside of his boot from distance in the 19th minute.
Theo Walcott had two relatively good chances in the first half to draw level but both were squandered, allowing Southampton to go in at the break leading. The first shot on goal from the right-back [Martina] goes in the top corner.
Southampton took a 19th-minute lead against Arsenal when Curacao defender Cuco Martina delivered a majestic strike from 25 metres, the ball starting well outside the right post and curving perfectly before nestling in the bottom corner of the net.
The Republic Of Ireland global played a neat one-two with Mane, before turning his team-mate’s cross past Cech from close range amid Arsenal complaints over a perceived trip from Long on Koscielny on his way to collect the final pass.
Jose Fonte’s header and another Long effort late on added extra gloss to the scoreline on a night when Saints’ response to recent disappointments was as marked as Arsenal’s collapse. Interestingly, Arsenal have gone into the Christmas period in second place twice – and on both occasions they went on to win the title. And we were soon punished, with Shane Long finally getting the goal he had been threatening to score all game.
“In many challenges we were second best and the referee let a lot go as well”, said the Frenchman.
Virgil van Dijk had a disallowed goal for offside, another warning sign that Southampton were up for this but the Saints’ second goal summed up their day.

Long easily won a foot-race with Mertesacker to sprint onto Victor Wanyama’s lofted through-ball shortly before half-time and should really have put Southampton a further goal clear. Alexis Sanchez, who has nine goals in all competitions this season, is another player who can be deployed through the middle, now cutting in from the left. I think what changed is we are more stable defensively.
