Sakshi ends India’s medal drought

Sakshi Malik, who won a bronze in the 58 kg women’s freestyle wrestling, and ended India’s medal drought in 2016, follows her on the list.

After becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the Rio Olympics, Sakshi Malik had been showered with rewards and praises from various government institutions.

Recalling the meeting of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi with P V Sindhu during the send-off ceremony organised for the Rio bound players in New Delhi, the sports minister said Shri Modi was keenly following the progress of PV Sindhu at Rio right from her first match. “Be it in any field, you have set an example for all the people in India and for that I would like to thank you”, Anushka told India Today. “I recommend for the promotion of Sukhbir Malik for his contribution”, he said.

Meanwhile, Haryana Government has already announced to provide the sum of 2.50 crore Rs.to Sakshi Malik for her contribution to making not only Haryana but the whole country proud. But Sakshi was getting nervous so I stayed back with her.

“Congratulations Sakshi Malik on your victory”. But the 23-year-old from Rohtak went against the wishes of her family and fulfilled her dream of becoming a wrestler and an Olympic medallist.

“I have stood up to the hopes of the country for the first medal”.

“Please accept my hearty congratulations and best wishes on this accomplishment, which has done India proud and ensured that our flag flies high in the worldwide arena”.

Sakshi spoke to an excited Indian media army soon after her success.

On whether she would dedicate the medal to anyone: I can’t name any one person.

Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and other leaders from the State also congratulated Sakshi for her achievement. “However I can, whichever way I can, I only would pin her because I somewhere knew that if I just stayed in the fight till the end of the six minutes, I would win”.
