Sale to start Thursday against Cubs

The Detroit Tigers’ chances of winning the American League Central went up slightly but their wild card odds went down after splitting a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox.

Chicago White Sox staff ace Chris Sale cut up the team’s throwback jerseys on Saturday in perhaps the most weird incident in baseball this season, but the team still had games to play.

The suspension comes to $250,000 of his $9.15 million salary. He was also fined about $12,700. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

Saturday he transmogrified into enraged fashion critic Christopher Scissorhands, destroying his and many other of the team’s 1976 “throwback” jerseys the Sox had planned to wear that night.

Sale has lately been the subject of trade rumors, which one imagines will only intensify now. Hahn said Thursday the White Sox were “mired in mediocrity” and hinted at possible big roster changes.

Chris Sale apparently did not agree with this policy.

Clubhouse attendants long have been part of baseball’s hidden fabric, serving players’ various needs. The White Sox declined to describe the incident, but said it’s “currently under further investigation by the club” and that Sale was sent home from the park. “It does not move the needle one iota in terms of his value to this club, his value to any other club that may be interested in his services or the likelihood of him being moved or kept whatsoever. None of that stuff is impacted at all by these events”.

In New York, Nathan Eovaldi pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira hit early solo home runs and the Yankees completed a 6-4 homestand that likely was too little and too late to keep management from selling off players ahead of the August 1 trade deadline. The left-hander, 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA, has been outspoken in the past. If the jerseys are somehow so uncomfortable that no starter ever wants to use them, the White Sox should have addressed that with the outfitter months ago. LaRoche retired as a result, and Sale hung LaRoche’s jersey in his locker. He led the AL in strikeouts with 274 last season and is a five-time All-Star.

And now, we have a story about the White Sox recently protesting the Seattle Mariners’ clubhouse dues policy at Safeco Field.
