Salt Lake City Capitol building evacuated after man abandons unloaded rifle
Investigators have identified the man who dropped off an unloaded rifle at the state Capitol Thursday as 31-year-old Cameron Crimefighter.

The truck was headed south on I-15 near 700 South when it came upon another dump truck, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Lawrence Hopper said.
He then left less than a minute later, before troopers arrived.
The package was immediately inspected by a bomb squad. He drove off in a white SUV he had parked outside.
As soon as troopers saw this on the cameras, they went to the rotunda, but the man was already gone.
The rifle was a semiautomatic rifle but Hopper did not have details about it.
The box had a note written on it, but Redd declined Friday to say what it said, citing an ongoing investigation.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be “presented to the appropriate prosecutor for screening”, Royce said. Police officers claim inhabitants should remain calm as the situation is under control and the mysterious gun was not an actual threat.
But the man was apparently concerned with a different hot-button political issue: gun violence.
Captain Barton Blair of the Utah Highway Patrol told Fox 13: ‘It appeared to us that he knelt down by the package, and offered a silent prayer and was saying a few words and got up and left’.

After entering the building, he walked to the center of the rotunda and placed the package on the floor with the wreath on top, Hopper said. The package also was covered in writing, but the contents of any message were not released. But that’s being used right now to try to determine what’s taking place and who might be involved’.
