Saltalamacchia’s HR lifts Tigers over White Sox 4-3
Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s drive was so high in the air, it was fair to doubt whether it had the right trajectory to clear the wall in right-center field.

“I saw the outfielders kind of meeting right at that little Bermuda Triangle out there, so I got a little scared”, Saltalamacchia said. The Tigers totaled two runs in losses on Saturday and Sunday, capped by a 5-0 shutout, and fell two games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild card while remaining 4 1/2 in back of the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus tweaked his lineup, moving CF Cameron Maybin to the leadoff position and dropping 2B Ian Kinsler to the No. 2 spot. “He’s contributed to the offense quite a bit”.
After Saltalamacchia’s blast, Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 37th save with a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
In the fourth, the White Sox loaded the bases with a pair of two-out singles before Tyler Saladino hit a two-run single to centerfield.
Miguel Cabrera’s sacrifice fly gave Detroit a 1-0 lead in the third.
Justin Upton added a solo homer for Detroit.
After Martinez held Milwaukee to one run over six innings, the Brewers scored four runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. “There’s very few times where he’s come in and said he couldn’t go”, manager Robin Ventura said. Starting pitcher Matt Boyd pitched four-plus innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.
Chicago’s Jose Abreu had a single and a double and has reached base in 25 consecutive games. That would give Fulmer six days’ rest between starts as Detroit tries to manage his workload.
The White Sox are 6-2 in their last 8 overall and are 6-2 in their last 8 games on grass while going 7-16 in their last 23 road games.
Tigers: RHP Mike Pelfrey (lower back strain) allowed a run and three hits in three innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Toledo at Indianapolis. He struck out three and walked two. The throw went to second anyway, and when Maybin slid in, his left hand appeared to make contact with second baseman Tyler Saladino’s knee.
The Detroit Tigers look for a win versus the visiting Chicago White Sox in Tuesday action.
