Salvation Army feeds Thanksgiving need

The Salvation Army is calling for generous residents to visit its charity shop, where a Christmas tree has been covered in tags describing a variety of people in need, choose a tag and buy a gift for the person mentioned. The plaque is now in the Centre’s kitchen. So, if you’d like to help families across the community receive a Christmas meal, all you have to do is deliver your donation to the Salvation Army on Putnam Avenue.

Santa Cruz Mayor Don Lane remarked that those like him in the public sector know there are many community needs that can not be satisfied without help.

Jerry Morrison, Chairperson for the Mahaska County Salvation Army, said that the bells are now ringing in the Mahaska County area.

The Salvation Army of Augusta has one hundred and thirty beds.

Local volunteers from USC students to retired seniors were honored Monday as The Salvation Army of the Midlands kicked off “red kettle season”. “We got over $100,000 a year ago in this chapter”.

“This really comes in handy for us”, Taylor said.

Salvation Army officials employ more than 200 local people as bell ringers, many of whom, can not find or get work due to a variety of disabilities and issues. “It’s very important we get as close to our goal as possible”.

The volunteers bring Alvin along for their two hour shifts, such as one last week outside a Kroger, and another one coming up Friday at Walmart.

Bill Shimmins, managing director of the Isle of Man Bank, said the bank has been helping with the toy appeal for 11 years. For some, they are the ones in need of the help.

Organizers of the 106 annual Thanksgiving Day 10K Race have made changes so folks don’t walk away with boxes of snacks for hungry runners like they did a year ago. “We usually take applications through the first week of December and put them on waiting lists, but in the past we’ve been able to help most people who need it”. Our little family will be able to have our own Christmas Day meal and the children will have gifts.

Any angels left on the trees are still provided for through surplus donations of the community.

When it was started way back in the 1800s William Booth saw the social need in the country and although we have moved out of Victorian times there is still a huge need.
