Sam Allardyce: England job is my greatest challenge

“I think this group is very experienced and going forward can be producing more performances, and better results”. “For me, it is absolutely the best job in English football”.

“The pressure on players at global level we will be looking at in depth”, said the 61-year-old, who lost out to Steve McClaren for the job 10 years ago.

Allardyce revealed that Sammy Lee, who worked with him at Bolton Wanderers, is joining his coaching team and also thanked Sunderland for helping him to reach his dream job.

“I think the bonding of the team is exceptionally important”.

Allardyce said on Monday he “fits the chair” and can turn around the country’s fortunes after a torrid Euro 2016 exit. “I have the experience to pass on and to challenge myself”.

But Allardyce, who left Sunderland this week after keeping them in the Premier League last season, is not scared of the job. “Man-management is my asset, to get the players to enjoy themselves and get the best from them”.

Having failed to make an impact in recent tournaments, Allardyce’s primary remit is to mould an England team capable of peaking in time for the 2018 World Cup.

“I hope it’s a hugely hard task for me to pick my first squad because everybody is on really good form and playing exceptionally well. And have some fun, the game of football is to be enjoyed and I’ve enjoyed my life in the game for many years”, he said. His first chance to impress will come when Allardyce’s men play Croatia in a friendly on 1 September.

Allardyce, speaking at his first news conference since his appointment was confirmed last week, said: “It’s far too early to make any predictions in that area”.

“I’ve been a success at every club I’ve been at, starting with Limerick FC, by the way”, Allardyce said as his record was questioned by some journalists.

New England manager Sam Allardyce is set to be unveiled.

“People see me as someone who can go into a club and turn things around very quickly and I suppose that comes around by taking West Ham up, saving Blackburn and saving Sunderland”.

“My style of play has always been a tag for me that I can’t shake off but I played with Jermain Defoe down the middle on his own previous year so it cannot be really associated with me after that”. “I’d describe my style as pragmatic”.

“I think Jose will determine (where), because if Jose says he is not going to play him in centre midfield and he is playing up front and scoring goals for Manchester United then it would be pointless me bringing him into England and playing him in centre midfield”.
