Sam Allardyce: Sunderland must prove Dick Advocaat wrong and stay up
Allardyce has been critical of his side’s recent performances, which have seen Sunderland slump to four consecutive Premier League defeats.

The 36-year-old former Manchester United and England star has made just one appearance all season, in a 6-2 Barclays Premier League drubbing at Everton on November 1.
He said: “Probably it’ll have to be from overseas, by the looks of what’s about and available in this country”.
“The overall picture was that Manchester City dominated but because they were heavily punished by the quality of the finishing Arsenal showed they ended up losing the game, so I think if we are to get anything from the game we need to play an terrible lot better than we have in the last couple of games”.
“It starts with the front but the backline and the goalkeeper have to be the ones that ultimately secure those clean sheets, so a defender’s my first priority, a central defender”.
“Then we had some positive results and I thought that would lift the confidence”.
“Whether we can find one good enough is another matter”.
Sunderland are five points adrift of safety and Allardyce believes his players are stifled by fear.
The shortage of options at the heart of the defence at the moment is a problem for Allardyce with Younes Kaboul now sidelined, and John O’Shea also struggling with an injury, but despite that it appears that he doesn’t want Rodwell limited in his play, and feels he should be able to make an effective contribution in the middle of the park as much as possible. “If some players leave it may be three, as long as they’re going to make a difference”.
“I like Lee because he gives us a more competitive edge out of possession”, he added.
Centre-back O’Shea was in visible discomfort in the closing stages of Saturday’s disappointing 4-1 reverse at Manchester City after taking a knock to his calf.
The captain has a calf injury, so Allardyce is likely to turn either to Wes Brown or youngster Tom Beadling. We need to win at home and get confidence.

After making another six changes without success at the Etihad, he said: “We’re not too bad in possession, we’ve got some skilful players who can handle the ball”.
