Sam Allardyce to keep ‘lucky penny’ after late England victor against Slovakia

Kane was forced to play a more isolated role with England, one which has continued under Allardyce, but he claims he enjoyed the outing against Slovakia and has no qualms over the demands placed on him at global level.

“We keep plugging away and I thought as a unit we played brilliantly”, said Lallana. I can’t understand it.

Rooney is also England’s leading goalscorer, with 53 goals.

Allardyce was asked about the letter in a pre-match press conference and had said he “might be able to oblige” – and he clearly did.

With that being said, the England marksman did endure a nine-match barren spell for Tottenham at the beginning of last season, and yet still won the Premier League’s Golden Boot by netting 25 times.

But despite suffering another frustrating evening with England, Kane insists his ability to dispel his “one-season wonder” label last season underlines his readiness to prove a point again with England.

But most pressing is the role of captain Wayne Rooney.

How do you drop your captain?

“I’ve done it my whole career and suddenly it’s big news”.

Rooney has moved one ahead of David Beckham, who played 115 games for the Three Lions, but the striker is still behind Peter Shilton, who won 125 caps for England. Rooney is adamant there has been too much scrutiny of his role.

With the referee checking his watch at the City Arena in Trnva, midfielder Danny Rose sent a hopeful low ball into the area for Lallana, who jinked left past a defender and struck a low shot through the legs of Slovakia goalkeeper Matus Kozacik for his first England goal in 27 games.

In Sunday’s game against Slovakia, the Manchester United man was played in a deep-lying midfield role and that affected the complexion of the entire game.

“It was a tough game with the heat and the running, but I am getting fitter and fitter”.

“I think they were probably a bit nervous”, Allardyce said. I would even prefer the industry of Danny Drinkwater.

England defeated Slovakia 1-0, thanks to a last gasp finish from Adam Lallana. I would usually write something about “sparing England’s blushes” but I can’t after the Iceland debacle.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has stated that he does not understand the criticism being directed at England captain Wayne Rooney.

Jose Mourinho will make it happen.

“We’d like to get him into goalscoring positions more”.

Leaving Rooney out of any lineup is a tough decision.

“I’d say passing’s a bit higher, definitely – it’s better than 71”.
