Sam Smith Is Taking A Twitter Break After Oscars Speech Backlash

In his acceptance speech at the Los Angeles awards ceremony, Smith, 23, dedicated his best original song award to the LGBT community claiming he was the first openly gay man to have won an Oscar. Not knowing who Ashman was, Smith joked, ‘I should know him. “Some Martinis are shaken not stirred are definitely in order”, the singer tweeted on Tuesday.

You might have loved Sam Smith’s Oscar performance on ‘The Writing’s on the Wall, ‘ but the singer is not impressed at all.

Jokingly suggested it to Smith to stop sending text messages to her fiancé, diver Tom Daley. The veteran was only referring to the main acting categories, a distinction which appeared to have been lost on Sam. “If this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I wanna dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world”, the singer told the Dolby Theatre audience.

First Ed Sheeran and now Sam Smith, our hearts can’t take it.

Smith is the latest LGBT Twitter casualty of the current awards season, after Stephen Fry fell victim to social media backlash following his BAFTA hosting gig last month. However, his mistaken contention that no openly gay person had ever won an Oscar (plenty have, but no openly gay actor has) resulted in anger, ridicule and a lot of people wincing at his faux pas.

Dustin Lance Black won best original screenplay at that time.

Black replied, ‘@samsmithworld Congratulations.

“Sam Smith was the first openly gay man to drink a Capri-Sun”.

One can assume that the fact that Black’s post was retweeted 16 thousand times – and that that of course led to a Twitter frenzy – in part led to Smith needing a break.
