Sam Smith releases James Bond ‘Spectre’ theme song

Whether by coincidence or by meticulous planning, Sam Smith’s new James Bond theme song, “Writing’s On the Wall“, was released today, just five days before the cutoff date for 2016 Grammy Awards eligibility. Fans can now weigh in. Nope-but if we find ourselves with a more introspective, emotional Bond come November, don’t say Sam Smith didn’t warn you.

“If I risk it all / Could you break my fall?” he adds.

“I have been dreaming of this moment for a long long time”, he goes on.

Sounds like mission accomplished to us.

“The song made its debut on Friday morning and is now available on both iTunes and Spotify, as reported by Variety.” Listen to it below. The singer and Napes wrote the song in less than 30 minutes, according to NPR, and ended up using Smith’s vocal demo on the final track.

Writing’s on the Wall is backed to reach number one, beating Adele’s Oscar-winning theme for 2012’s Skyfall.

“I tried to put myself in the shoes of Bond”, Smith explains. “I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song”. While it’s tough to ask any artist, especially a singer who is boring, to follow Adele’s awesome “Skyfall” theme, this disappoints even without the high expectations. In the lyrics – “How do I live, how do I breathe?” Who knows? But I’m not looking for that; that’s really not what I want with this song.

“The new Bond theme is way better than I expected although it’s poor lyrically”.

Although Sam is pleased with his track it has been met by a mixed reaction from fans on social media, with many supporters of the 007 franchise disappointed with the track.
