The 23-year-old is the first solo male British singer to perform the opening number for a James Bond film since 1965, when Tom Jones was heard over the credits for Thunderball. It’s been an unforgettable experience working with Barbara (Broccoli) and Sam (Mendes) to become part of this British legacy.

Writing’s on the Wall“, so far has twice the combined sales than Justin Bieber’s new single “What Do You Mean?“, which is his closest competitor on the upcoming chart.

“I had to lie through my teeth, which isn’t much fun”, Sam told Britain’s The Sun newpsaper “My lying is really good now, when you say “genuinely” people believe it”.

Shirley Bassey is the only artist to sing three Bond themes (the others being “Diamonds Are Forever” and “Moonraker”), but let’s face it, “Goldfinger” is the one they and all others are measured against. The Spectre theme has also given Smith his fifth United Kingdom number one. The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis wrote that it sounded “less like a Bond theme song than a latterday pop ballad – the kind of thing that X Factor contestants have a crack at”.

Former 007 Roger Moore praised the song, describing it as “haunting and wonderfully orchestrated”.
