In a decision that may be seen as yet another snub to son Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday appointed Amar Singh as the National General Secretary of the party, nearly six years he was removed from the same post as well as the party.
“The Samajwadi parivar and the party are united lot”. Mulayam collaborated with Shivpal Yadav and got Amar Singh elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Besides the MLCs, state chief of SP youth brigade Mohd Ebad, state president of SP yuvjan sabha Brijesh Yadav, national president of SP youth brigade Gaurav Dubey, and state chief of chatra sabha Digvijay Singh Dev were sacked from the party on similar grounds by Shivpal, drawing protest from pro-Akhilesh camp.
The label of “outsider” that was being applied to Amar Singh in the Samajwadi Party’s latest internal strife in Uttar Pradesh is no longer valid.
Amar’s appointment as general secretary may again trigger resentment within the family though Akhilesh on Tuesday sought to put up a fearless face and said the family was united.
He fielded a large number of candidates in 2012 assembly polls but none won.
Mulayam made the statement to defend Amar on the charge that he had triggered the family feud in Yadav clan. Shivpal Yadav had defended Amar Singh, trashing accusations that he was working to harm the family and the party. “There is clear instruction to all party office workers and functionaries that there will be no compromise on indiscipline and factionalism”, remarked Shivpal while speaking to ToI at his residence on Monday evening. Amar’s bete noire and senior minister Azam Khan had also attacked him for meddling in family affairs.
As national general secretary, Amar Singh, who was expelled from the party for six years and returned only recently, will play a prominent role for the Samajwadi Party in crucial assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh early next year.

Commenting on that Amar had said, “Akhilesh is like a son and Mulayam like a brother”. Akhilesh also had to “accept” Shivpal as the party’s state unit chief, a post to which his uncle had been appointed replacing him.
