Samsung debuts its first VR camera, the Gear 360

The new Galaxy S7 flagship smartphone and its curved-screen companion, the Galaxy S7 Edge, look strikingly similar to their predecessors and lack fresh features to set them apart in a crowded field of Android handsets.

In addition to new phones, Samsung also introduced the Samsung Gear 360, a small, spherical camera that can shoot and record 360-degree views.

As aforementioned the Galaxy S7 is waterproof like the Galaxy S5 was, but also comes with an IP68 rating, so it’s dust friendly, for the next time you’re stuck in a sandstorm and need you use your phone.

The new models are water resistant and can be immersed in water for up to 30 minutes or placed 1.5 meters under. Images and videos are stored to a microSD card (up to 128 GB in size) and can be transferred over Wi-Fi to a Samsung Galaxy phone to be stitched together. The smartphones will also be available from the vendor’s online store.

Samsung unveiled details of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Sunday.

“These new devices combined with the Samsung VR bundle and a year of Netflix on us are a win for consumers who want the hottest new Samsung superphone”, said T-Mobile president and CEO John Legere.

Smartphone launches are well-oiled little events now, and you can already pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge from Carphone Warehouse.

The Galaxy S7 series features a “Dual Pixel” 12 mega-pixel rear camera and a 5 mega-pixel front camera, with F1.7 aperture and Smart OIS feature.

The Gear 360 is a tiny, double-lensed sphere of a camera that’s supposed to make shooting and sharing 360-degree photos and videos easy and approachable.

There is no word on the pricing yet, but it will be available starting second quarter of this year. Cricket is a great place to pick up the Samsung Galaxy S7, especially if you’re looking to get the device and not pay a whole lot on your monthly bill.

“Right now, VR is mostly used for games and entertainment, but that’s quickly evolving, and one day you’re going to be able to put on a headset and that’s going to change the way that you live, work and communicate”.
