Samsung delays Galaxy Note 7 shipment amid battery explosion claims

Samsung has delayed the shipments for its flagship Galaxy Note 7, following various reports of the phone exploding in South Korea and other parts of the world. The company has stated for Reuters that it received no information suggesting that the batteries supplied for the Note 7 were faulty. That said, exploding cellphone batteries can be extremely risky, and so it could be wise for Samsung to recall the Note 7 before one of these exploding batteries seriously injures someone. Samsung did not offer additional comment to USA TODAY. We will share the findings as soon as possible.

This is super bad timing for Samsung as the iPhone 7 will be unveiled in a matter of days. South Korea’s Yonhap News said five or six explosions were reported by consumers. This will be done free of charge in Samsung’s service centers. The stock closed 2 percent lower in the previous session.

Samsung launched the Note 7 on August 19 in some markets, including South Korea and the U.S. It did not say if those phones are different from the ones sold in South Korea.

Sister company Samsung SDI, the main battery supplier of these large-screen phones, said it was waiting for results of an investigation into the problem.

Furthermore, several customers have uploaded videos and images online claiming that their phones had caught on fire. The photos and accounts could not be immediately verified. No injuries have been reported.
