Samsung Elec says launching iris-recognition tablets in India

Priced at Rs 13,499, this tablet is not only “Made in India”, but it also boasts iris-recognition technology as well. Indeed, similar schemes have been vetoed elsewhere in the world, but in March this year India passed the new Aadhaar bill, a move created to make the Aadhaar number mandatory for all government subsidies, and ultimately push towards a cashless and paperless society.

The device comes with an inbuilt internal storage capacity up to 8 GB and it can also be expandable through the microSD card up to 200 GB.

Currently, Samsung is focussing on selling the tablet to enterprise customers as it believes that iris-based authentication still has more “assisted” usage.

The device is created to comply with Digital India and E-Citizen campaign, and the biometric technology incorporated seems to be the center of it.

Moving on, the device also has USB OTG host support, connecting peripheral devices like barcode scanner or a printer, and its Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) feature supports low power wireless communication with connected devices.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris powered by iris technology will enable users to access services remotely by embedding Aadhar iris-biometric authentication capabilities.

It’s “ready for Aadhar authentication through an integrated and highly secure biometric device”, according to a press release issued today. “This will encourage our startup ecosystem to rapidly build relevant apps and services”, he said.

Coming to the hardware specifications of this humble tablet, you get a 7.0-inch WSVGA (1024×600 pixels) capacitive touchscreen display.

Concerning specific functionalities, the company said that the tab will help significantly boost the government’s Digital India programmes, E-Citizen, and Banking services.

As it’s billed as the LTE model, it will support a data connection as well as WiFi and it also comes with a 4000mAh battery, which is decent.
