The recall announcement applies to all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices sold in the USA before 15th September 2016, which amount to 1 million according to the official statement.
The U.S. consumer protection agency on Thursday announced an official recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones due to a battery problem. They encouraged owners to visit Samsung’s website for information on how to swap out a recalled phone.
In its message to consumers, the CPSC said Samsung received 92 reports of batteries overheating in the U.S. Of those, 26 customers reported burns; 55 reported property damage.
The firm tapped China’s Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) as the main battery supplier for the Note 7 phones, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Customers are being urged to keep their mobile off until they can get an exchange, but the commission has insisted customers can ask for a refund.
“The recall is an embarrassing comedown for Samsung, an icon of South Korean innovation that accounts for one-fifth of the country’s exports”, The New York Times said. The PHMSA also mentioned that it has issued a special permit to Samsung with instructions that retailers must follow when shipping recalled devices.
To determine if their devices were part of the recall, consumers were advised to locate a number on the back of the smartphones and call Samsung toll-free at 844-365-6197 or enter the number into an online registration site.
The recall comes as Samsung is locked in a fierce battle with Apple for the attentions of high-end smartphone purchasers.
Naturally, the FAA’s ban on the Galaxy Note 7 extends to charging the device on the plane as well. During the 2-minute video, Baxter apologized for the battery issue and confirmed that the company has replaced 130,000 Galaxy Note 7 units.
