At least 35 cases have been found of the phone blowing up while it was charging.
Samsung’s Note 7s are being pulled from shelves in 10 countries, including South Korea and the United States, just two weeks after the product’s launch.
The company is expected to make an official statement before week’s end, and it may consider a recall if the explosions were in fact caused by a mechanical flaw.
The news has been swirling since yesterday evening and now it’s finally official: the Samsung Galaxy Note7 is being recalled worldwide due to a battery defect that causes fires. Samsung has accelerated the launch of its new phones in recent years to get a head- start on Apple. No injuries have been reported, the AP says.
(INTERNATIONAL) – Electronics manufacturer Samsung is set to announce a global recall of its new Galaxy Note 7 high-end smart phone in less than a week, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency. The company said it used a battery made by another supplier for the Note 7 sold in China.
The battery supplier produces the battery cell, while outsourcing the battery pack production to other firms. At a news conference, company executives declined to comment on exactly how much replacing all the devices would cost. “The most important thing is the safety of our customers and we don’t want to disappoint our loyal customers”.
On Wednesday, Samsung said it was delaying shipments of the Note 7 for “quality” testing, but it didn’t say exactly what the problems were with the phone.
South Korean high school teacher Park Soo-Jung said she had rushed to buy the new phone, pre-ordering and then activating it on August 19, its official launch date. In one instance it went from around 60 percent charge to zero in a couple of minutes and on two subsequent occasions it suddenly shut down while showing around 30 percent charge.
On Friday, Samsung announced the recall of its Galaxy Note 7 phones.
“We are communicating our shops in the UAE regarding the suspension of Galaxy Note7 sales in the country”, the source informed.
