The better-than-expected earnings estimate for the 2016 second-quarter was the result of its flagship smartphone business division scooping up huge profit.

Under the circumstances, Samsung Electronics’ operating profit for the first half of 2016 is estimated at 14.78 trillion won, about two trillion won more than that of the first half of a year ago.

That puts the Galaxy S7 on a sales pace that is almost twice as fast as that of last year’s Galaxy S6, which analysts estimate took Samsung about six months to hit 27 million unit shipments.

Samsung said revenue for the quarter likely rose 3 percent from a year earlier to 50 trillion won, compared with 51.4 trillion won tipped by the Thomson Reuters survey.

The Samsung results are in contrast to those of Apple who are struggling to hold onto market share in Asia, in particular China.

The world’s number two chipmaker has dominated production of faster, larger-capacity chips using a technology called 3D NAND.

Apple, which sold about 10 million fewer units in the quarter and had a 15 per cent market share.
