Sony is expected to use a press conference on Thursday afternoon to reveal a new version of the Xperia smartphone, while new audio products – including headphones are also usually part of the firm’s IFA offering and are also expected to feature.

There are also some slight differences in the design of the Classic and Frontier Samsung Gear S3 smartwatches.

Samsung today unveiled its new Gear S3 smartwatch at the IFA conference in Berlin, and it’s clearly learned a lot from its smartwatch-making experience. The Samsung Gear S3 has been announced before Apple’s much awaited event and the company has stolen a march on the Apple Watch, as it will also be able to connect to iPhones, which is unbelievable. According to sources, the Gear S3 will be available in the USA within the next few months. This is in clear contrast to the Apple Watch, which is heavily dependent on the iPhone.

The reveal comes just days ahead of the anticipated debut of the Apple Watch 2, the Daily Telegraph points out.

The watch has a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display, which is a hair larger than the 1.2-inch screen on the Gear S2. “With smart capabilities and sophisticated, elegant design, the Gear S3 marks a significant addition to our smartwatch portfolio”. Both the variants of the smartwatch feature speakers and a Global Positioning System. However, once the device hits the 5% battery mark, it enters into “watch only” mode, which powers it for quite a while. Ok, so we know that the Gear S3 does not have anything revolutionary either, and the jury is out on its design because it’s lost that special something the outgoing S2 has, but it’s far more functional. However, the company has improved on many aspects when compared to last years’ release, and has added a number of new tweaks and upgrades to their smartwatch. The thing is, the wearable market is different to what Apple is used to, and moves much faster than the phone and computer market, and so they really need to up their game. On the right side, there’s a Back button in the two o’clock position and a Home button at four o’clock, just like on the Gear S2.
