Samsung halts Galaxy Note 7 shipments after smartphone ‘explosions’

The Chosun Ilbo quotes a staffer at a battery maker: “The rapid recharging function of the Galaxy Note 7 generates more heat than conventional recharging and puts a lot of strain on the battery”. The company is reportedly not considering refunds or exchange with a new phone.

The Herald says that Samsung plans to go forward with the September 1st and September 2nd Galaxy Note 7 launches in China and Europe, respectively.

“Apple is supposed to show off the iPhone 7 next week and this issue (with Samsung) has emerged, so the current state of things do not look good”, HDC Asset Management fund manager Park Jung-hoon said.

This report is just one among the many being posted by users on social media, with pictures to prove that their Galaxy Note 7 exploded while charging.

The delays in shipments will surely have a negative impact on Galaxy Note 7 sales, despite the high number of pre-orders that the model recorded.

Faults with the new flagship device could be a major blow to the South Korean firm.

Samsung had hoped to maintain the strong momentum seen as of late, but a delay in shipments due to quality control testing all but guarantees Apple will gain at the very least a near-term edge.

Furthermore, several customers have uploaded videos and images online claiming that their phones had caught on fire.

The phone, which launched in South Korea and other markets on August 19, retails at 988,900 won ($887.23) in South Korea.

The pause in shipments means that those who pre-ordered the well reviewed Galaxy Note 7 could have to wait to get their hands on the cutting-edge smartphone. Shares of Samsung closed down 2% Thursday on South Korea’s KOSPI, causing a decline of about $4 billion in the company’s market value. The company’s stock is falling rapidly, so it’ll possibly issue an official statement on the matter very soon.
