Koh Dong-jin, head of the South Korean company’s smartphone business, expressed regret over the recall, which will affect markets including South Korea and the United States, at a news conference on Friday.

“Earlier today, Samsung announced that it has stopped sales globally of the Galaxy Note7”.

“The ball is in Samsung’s court to make this right”.

“It’s a very hard thing for any organization – especially an organization the size of Samsung – to be able to immediately say, ‘We have a problem; let’s go back and fix it.’ That absolutely shows a strong focus on the consumer and the enterprise”, said Troisi, whose firm specializes in enterprise mobility solutions, including for Samsung devices. Samsung now uses batteries made by a number of different companies, including its sister firm Samsung SDI. “They say, ‘Oh, it’s just a couple of devices.’ And then it gets to be a bigger problem”, said Steven Kantorowitz, president of CelPro Associates, a Samsung partner based in NY. Samsung said it would replace devices under warranty if it failed, but it declined to let customers swap phones otherwise or to issue a broader recall.

“I can’t comment on exactly how much the cost will be, but it pains my heart that it will be such a big number”, he said. “Nevertheless, the reason we made this decision is because what is most important is customer safety”.

South Korean high school teacher Park Soo-Jung said she had rushed to buy the new phone, pre-ordering and then activating it on August 19, its official launch date.

The 34-year-old living in the port city of Busan said that she was bruised when she rushed out of bed after her phone burst into flames, filling her bedroom with smoke stinking of chemicals. They also said that customers would be able to exchange their Galaxy Note 7 in the upcoming weeks for another smart phone. Sales in China started on Thursday. The AP reports that, according to Samsung, the Galaxy Note 7s sold in China used a different battery that wasn’t affected by the flaw.
